Roz Flax was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1929. She lived much of her professional life in St. Louis, Missouri, where she received a Masters of Arts degree from Lindenwood College. She also studied art at the prestigious Art Student League in New York City and the Academie Julian in Paris. She created art for over 50 years, as well as working as an art educator and registered art therapist with youth of all ages, young adults, and seniors. The breadth of her interest and mastery of art is exemplified by the many organizations in which she was a member: the American Art Therapy Association, the St. Louis Calligraphy Guild, the St. Louis Artist’s Guild, the Greater St. Louis Art Association, Gateway Pastel Artists, and the St. Louis Watercolor Society. Her technique often combined multi-media and explored her many-layered personal view of life.
Roz Flax exhibited nationally and internationally to promote the importance of the arts and her belief that art matters. She received major awards in art competitions for her work in pastel, mixed-media, and watercolor. Her work can be found in private collections in the U.S. and abroad. She was instrumental in bringing “chalk talks” to various venues in the U.S. and abroad. Using a large easel, giant pieces of chalk, and music, Roz reached across the language barrier and spoke to audiences in countries such as Peru and Japan with themes that emphasized the goal of unity and world peace. As an artist, she used multiple media and techniques to explore the intrinsic patterns in the natural world and urban settings. Her love of calligraphy and design transformed quotations of the sages, messages for social change, and her own poetry into works of art. Viewing Roz’s art in this retrospective reveals the complexity of her personal journey and the multi-dimensional role of the artist in modern times.
Our latest exhibition, “Large and Still In Charge” is a sequel exhibition to the last exhibit called “Large and in Charge”. The Flax Foundation is excited to host its first event at the new location. And will be ever present in all of our events by sponsoring one female artists each exhibition. The Flax Foundation also owns the entire retrospective of Roz Flax, the foundations inspiration. The late Roz Flax was a loved member of ArtDimensions throughout her life and now lives on as her work is still displayed, seen, sold, and taken away to loving homes.
ArtDimensions’ Flax Foundation is dedicated to professional women artists and the professional development of women artists in the St. Louis Metropolitan area. Women artists face the same challenges as other professional career women. They need more visibility, encouragement, training, financial and emotional support from family, friends and community to accomplish their goals in the competitive business of art. The ArtDimensions Flax Foundation raise money to focus on ways to help fulfill these needs.
